Hyggligt completes successful harvest using the Hyggligt Method

Stockholm, 2023-12-05
Hyggligt, an innovative startup in continuous-cover forestry (hyggesfritt skogsbruk), has successfully completed its first harvest using the Hyggligt Method (Hyggligtmetoden). This method—data-driven precision harvesting through selective logging (plockhuggning)—has the potential to transform continuous-cover forestry. The harvest was carried out for Hyggligt’s pilot customer in Östhammar and began during the last week of November.
The Hyggligt Method uses laser data, image analysis, and an optimization algorithm to assess each tree in a stand and make optimal harvesting decisions. The company has also introduced a visualization tool for harvester operators, improving efficiency and reducing harvesting costs. The operator has an in-cab display in the harvester that visualizes which trees to harvest. The software is a kind of digital twin of the forest—like a 3D version of Google Maps, but with the trees to be harvested marked out.
Edith Heppich, CEO and co‑founder of Hyggligt, highlights the significance for Hyggligt and Swedish forestry: “This is a major milestone for us. We’ve now verified that our visualization tool for harvester operators works—and that it helps the operator find the right trees efficiently. Our technology can transform continuous-cover forestry (hyggesfritt skogsbruk) and, in the long run, Swedish forestry as a whole.”

Through the harvest, Hyggligt has collected data that will help the company develop its AI model and improve harvesting decision-making. Over time, this will strengthen the company’s ability to offer effective solutions tailored to each forest owner’s unique needs.
The Hyggligt Method considers multiple parameters to maximize the forest’s volume growth and improve profitability. The method promotes natural regeneration (naturlig föryngring) and increases stand stratification, while also accounting for the site’s productive capacity.
Nils Fagerberg, forest researcher and co-owner of Hyggligt, describes Hyggligt as “an important startup initiative with the potential to transform forestry.”
Hyggligt aims to help forest owners through an end‑to‑end service for continuous-cover forestry (hyggesfritt skogsbruk)—from analysis and optimization to harvesting and timber sales.
